Grosset
Jeffrey Grosset fell for Riesling at 15, when his dad brought a bottle home to share. By 21 he had qualified in agriculture and winemaking, and after spells in Australia and Germany he bought a former milk depot in Auburn, in the Clare Valley. He opened his winery there in 1981.
His vineyards sit between 460 and 560 metres, the coolest spots in the Clare. Blue slate gives steely, long-lived Riesling, while red loam gives a more open style. The vines are tended by hand and certified organic and biodynamic.
In the winery Jeffrey keeps it gentle. He uses no fining agents and sulphur is the only thing added. Riesling is what he is best known for, but he also makes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cool Piccadilly Valley, plus Shiraz and Cabernet blends.
