Gunderloch

Gunderloch is one of the most respected names in the Rheinhessen, famous for Riesling from the red soils of the Roter Hang. With more than 130 years behind it, the estate played a key part in founding the VDP.

Its 24 hectares are mostly on this red hillside above the Rhine, between Nackenheim and Nierstein. The iron-rich slate, clay and limestone are around 280 million years old, and they give the Riesling real depth and minerality.

Sixth-generation winemaker Johannes Hasselbach took over from his parents in 2016 and the estate was certified organic in 2022. He has put soil health first, with cover crops, light tilling and solar-powered drones that spray biodynamic teas. The winery runs on solar power too, and Johannes keeps his hand light in the cellar.
