Producer Alentejo, Portugal

Herdade do Peso

Herdade do Peso has spent nearly thirty years making red wine in Vidigueira, a cooler part of the Alentejo better known for whites. Sogrape bought the estate in 1997.

Winemaker Luís Cabral de Almeida sees his job as reading nature. He has mapped the estate's 12 soil types and planted each grape where it does best, and Portugal's Revista de Vinhos named him Winemaker of the Year in 2024. His wines are ripe and generous, but kept fresh by good acidity.

The estate covers 457 hectares of rolling hills. Care for nature is a big part of life here, with a 20-hectare reservoir that catches rainwater for the vines, a new eco-friendly winery finished in 2022, and corridors of native trees like cork and holm oak for wildlife.
