Holdaway Estate
The Holdaway family own eight vineyards in Marlborough, 182 hectares in all, across Dillons Point and the Lower Wairau. They are leaders in regenerative farming and grow some of the region's best fruit.
The family came from England to Nelson by sea in 1842 and have farmed in Dillons Point for generations. Today Alan Holdaway runs things with his sons Richard and Robert. Robert, a forest ecologist with a PhD, puts it simply: look after the ecosystem and the rest will follow. Cover crops and grass between the vines now support more than 50 kinds of herbs and flowers.
They are also rewilding 2,300 hectares in the Upper Wairau with native forest, which makes the estate well and truly carbon negative. Winemaker Alana McGettigan makes their Sauvignon Blanc.
