Producer South Australia, Australia
John Duval
John Duval's family have grown grapes in South Australia for six generations, but he was the first to make the wine too. He spent years as chief winemaker at Penfolds before starting his own Barossa winery in 2003, with just one wine.
Rather than copy what he did at Penfolds, John has found his own style. His son Tim joined him in 2016. Together they buy grapes from old friends around the Barossa. Their vines give small crops and range from about 50 to more than 100 years old.
They keep things simple in the winery, and the wines show a pure, elegant side of the region rather than the big, rich Barossa style. Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre lead the reds, with Rhône white grapes for the whites.
