Producer Peloponnese, Greece

Kanakaris

Michalis Kanakaris founded his winery in 1979 in Aigialeia, in the northwest of the Peloponnese. Here the vines grow on steep, high, north-facing slopes below the Panachaiko mountains, cooled by the Corinthian Gulf.

He focused on local grapes such as Roditis, Sideritis and Mavro Kalavrytino. His grandsons, brothers Stefanos and Michalis, took over in 2009. They work with like-minded growers on 55 hectares of vines between 450 and 1,150 metres, among olive groves and citrus trees, and have added Malagousia, Moschofilero, Agiorgitiko, Merlot and Syrah.

Every grape is picked by hand and made in their newly updated winery, mostly in steel tanks to keep the fresh aromas of these Greek varieties. They even make a Retsina, the old Greek white flavoured with a little pine resin.
