Kir-Yianni
Yiannis Boutaris founded Kir-Yianni in 1997, after leaving his family's old firm, Boutari Wines. He did a lot to revive Greek wine and backed native grapes long before the world caught on, Xinomavro above all.
The estate has two homes on the slopes of the Vermio mountains. In Naoussa, Yiannis put in 40 hectares of Xinomavro back in 1970, just as many growers were pulling up vines for peach trees. In Amyndeon, the coolest wine region in Greece, sandy soils give fresh Assyrtiko and lifted, elegant Xinomavro, and the team works with more than 110 local growers to save old, ungrafted vines.
Yiannis's son Stellios, the fifth generation, now leads. He farms with care, with cover crops, no tilling and compost. In 2024 it was the first winery in Greece to work out the carbon footprint of both its cellars.
