Kloof Street
Kloof Street is made by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, and it is a great way into Swartland wine. The wines are fresh, balanced and very good value, made with the same care as their top bottles.
The name is the street in Riebeek-Kasteel where the couple lived when they first started out. Back then they rented vines and cellar space and had their licence at their home address, which Chris jokes was close to bootlegging from the garage. They are now among South Africa's most praised winemakers, and Kloof Street is a nod to those early days.
The approach is sustainable farming and a light hand in the cellar. The red blends Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca, and there is a Chenin Blanc from 40-year-old vines.
