La Riojana
La Riojana is a growers' cooperative in the Famatina Valley of La Rioja province, in Argentina's north-west, with its base in the town of Chilecito. Around 500 families belong to it, and most of its members live in the valley.
It first gained organic certification in 2000, and Fairtrade certification followed in 2006. About 30% of the growers are now certified organic.
Since 2006 the Fairtrade premium has raised more than 5.5 million US dollars. The members choose together where it goes, and the biggest projects so far have been for water, a school and health care.
