La Verrerie
In 1981 Jean-Louis Descours was looking for something to do in retirement when he fell for Château La Verrerie, in the Luberon. He bought the 20-hectare estate and set about reviving it with his son Gérard.
They built a new winery and bought more vines, aiming simply to make great wine, and released their first vintage in 1985. Today Jean-Louis's grandson Christopher Descours, owner of Charles Heidsieck Champagne, is in charge, working with winemaker Valentine Tardieu-Vitali.
There are now 48 hectares, mostly red grapes like Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan and Mourvèdre, plus a few hectares of whites such as Roussanne and Viognier. The vines are farmed organically and have been certified since 2013.
