Producer Lower Austria, Austria

Loimer

Fred Loimer is one of the pioneers of Austrian wine. He took over the family estate at Langenlois, in the cool but sunny Kamptal north-west of Vienna, in 1997.

He moved slowly into biodynamic farming and was certified in 2006. He helped found Respekt-BIODYN, a group of growers who farm this way, and in 2025 he started a forum at the estate on regenerative farming. Unlike many Austrians, he lets the grapes ripen fully and then ferments them fully dry.

His 85 hectares are split into 100 parcels across seven main soil types, which gives lots of variety. Expect crisp Grüner Veltliner and Riesling with citrus zest and a mineral edge. He also makes traditional-method sparkling wines, riddled by hand in old brick tunnels under the estate.
