Matošević

Ivica Matošević is one of the leading lights of Croatian wine, based in Istria. The late Steven Spurrier called him "Croatia's best winemaker".

His family story says a lot about the region. His grandfather was born in Austria, his father in Italy, Ivica in Yugoslavia and his daughter in Croatia, all in the same house. When the Istrian wine scene took off after Yugoslavia broke up in the early 90s, he gave up a PhD in agriculture to make wine.

He helped set up the Istrian appellation and has done a lot for Malvazija Istarska, the local white grape, with its herbal, mineral and gently bitter almond notes. He also makes reds from Teran, a grape a lot like Refosco, blended with Merlot.
