Producer Rhone, France

Matthieu Barret

Matthieu Barret, of Domaine du Coulet, buys grapes to make a négociant range from both ends of the Rhône, north and south. He works with growers he trusts, who share his ideas about farming and winemaking.

The idea is to have fun. The cheerful bear on the label is, he jokes, a self-portrait, and the wines are made to enjoy young. Grapes are picked by hand and fermented with wild yeasts in concrete vats.

Expect juicy Syrah with dark berry fruit and a touch of pepper, from vineyards farmed organically with biodynamic methods, and a fresh white from Roussanne and Marsanne. He also makes a Crozes-Hermitage from the terraced vineyards of his close friend David Reynaud.
