Maximin Grünhaus

Maximin Grünhaus is a Riesling estate in the Ruwer, part of the Mosel, where vines have been grown since Roman times. Its vineyards sit on steep, south-facing slopes, split into separate plots that each have their own character.

The name comes from the Abbey of Saint Maximin, which held the land from the 600s until the 1700s. The von Schubert family took over in the late 19th century. Since 2014 the sixth generation, Maximin von Schubert, has run it after his father Carl.

They farm with organic fertilisers and wild herbs between the vines, and pick by hand in several goes. Winemaker Stefan Kraml, here since 2004, uses wild yeasts, steel tanks and big oak casks made from trees in the estate's own woods. The Rieslings run from bone dry to sweet, all racy and mineral.
