MMAD Vineyard

MMAD Vineyard is a small project in Blewitt Springs, in South Australia's McLaren Vale. The name comes from the initials of its four partners: Martin Shaw, Michael Hill-Smith MW, Adam Wadewitz and David LeMire MW, the team behind Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle.

After years of looking, they bought an established vineyard here in early 2021, drawn by its old Chenin Blanc, Shiraz and Grenache. Blewitt Springs sits high up, with a cool, wet climate, so grapes ripen two or three weeks later than elsewhere in the district. Fresh south-westerly winds come off the Gulf of St Vincent.

The 16.5 hectares sit on sand over ironstone, which gives the wines perfume and structure. The vines are farmed along organic lines, and the oldest go back to 1939.
