Molino Real
Molino Real was set up in Málaga in 1995 by business partners Telmo Rodríguez and Pablo Eguzkiza. Their aim was to bring back Málaga's 'Mountain Wine', a sweet wine that once stood alongside the likes of Sauternes and Tokaji.
It was made from Moscatel grown in the canyons around Málaga, with the grapes dried in the sun before fermenting. Over time it fell out of fashion and nearly vanished. Telmo and Pablo were hunting for Spain's lost wine regions in the 90s, and they remembered Hugh Johnson saying old Mountain Wine was the best he had ever drunk.
Today they have nine hectares of Moscatel in the ravines of Cómpeta, in Axarquía, on dark schist and slate between 350 and 1,000 metres. They also buy from like-minded local growers, and make a dry Moscatel as well as the sweet wines.
