Momento

Momento is the solo project of South African winemaker Marelise Niemann, and it grew from her love of Mediterranean grapes and old vines. In 2023 Tim Atkin named her his Young Winemaker of the Year.

She learned her trade at Beaumont Family Wines between 2007 and 2014, and worked in Burgundy, the Rhône, Portugal and California. A spell in Priorat in 2010 with Eben Sadie got her hooked on old-vine Grenache, so back home she went looking for old Grenache vineyards of her own.

Her grapes come from the Swartland and Bot River. In the cellar she keeps things simple, with wild yeasts, old basket presses and old French oak, for pure, elegant wines. Grenache in several shades sits alongside Chenin Blanc and Tinta Barocca.
