Producer Central Valley, Chile

Montes

Montes was founded in Chile in 1987 by four partners: Aurelio Montes, Pedro Grand, Alfredo Vidaurre and Douglas Murray. Their aim was simple: make better wine than Chile was making at the time.

Winery at Apalta, Central Valley.

Aurelio is often credited with starting Chile's quality revolution, with a knack for spotting new places to grow grapes. He fell for Apalta in Colchagua, where Montes is based today. The name means 'poor soils', but he saw what the hillsides could do, and the team pushed for years until Apalta got its own DO in 2018.

They work hard to use less water. Their 'Sustainable Dry Farmed' system cuts their water footprint by 65%, and they became a B-Corp in 2024. Today they make wine from all over Chile, from cool coastal sites like Zapallar and Leyda to old Cinsault vines in Itata.
