Ocampo

Ocampo is a new project on Tenerife from winemaker Jonatan García Lima, who also makes the wines at Bodegas Tamerán and Suertes del Marqués. He is one of a new wave of Canary Island winemakers keeping old vineyards, local grapes and traditional ways alive.

The López Díaz family, old friends of his, invited him to make wine on their 12-hectare property in Tacoronte-Acentejo, the island's oldest DO, with reddish volcanic soils. The estate vines are ungrafted and farmed organically. He also buys from growers higher up, at 550 to 800 metres, who still train vines low along the ground in the old 'rastra' style to shelter them from the wind.

In the cellar he keeps it simple, with wild yeasts and gentle oak. There are two whites and two reds, from local grapes such as Listán Blanco, Listán Negro and Vijariego Negro.
