Otronia
Otronia makes wine in Chubut, in Patagonia, at 45 degrees south. It is the most southerly wine region in the world, and owner Alejandro Bulgheroni wanted to grow fine, cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir there.
The vines grow on the shore of Lake Musters, which local indigenous people once called Otron. Conditions are tough: little rain, bitter cold, frost risk all year and winds of up to 110 km an hour. Nets and thousands of trees shelter the vines. In 2010 they planted 50 hectares, now certified organic, with grapes from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to Riesling and Malbec.
Technical director Franck Noguiez works with consultant Alberto Antonini. They take a hands-off approach, using concrete eggs and large old French oak so the place can shine through.
