Patrick Sullivan

Patrick Sullivan makes single-vineyard Chardonnay in Gippsland, in Victoria, from old volcanic soils. He launched his own label in 2013 and has built a loyal following.

For Patrick, good wine starts in the vineyard. He switched from winemaking to vine growing at university, and worked in the Yarra Valley early on, learning sustainable farming. He calls his hands-on vineyard style 'maximum intervention'. He farms his own vineyard on organic and biodynamic lines and buys from growers across Gippsland who share his outlook.

In the cellar he keeps things simple: hand-picked grapes, whole-bunch pressing and wild yeasts in oak barrels. The wines are bright and fresh, with a mineral, salty edge from the volcanic soils.
