Pegaso
Pegaso is a winery in the Sierra de Gredos, the mountains west of Madrid. It began as a joint project between Telmo Rodríguez, his long-time partner Pablo Eguzkiza and rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr. The name honours a classic 1940s Spanish car maker.
Telmo and Pablo found these old Garnacha vineyards while touring Spain in search of forgotten regions. Their first vineyard, bought in 1999, is in Cebreros, a village famous for its rare red slate. In 2005 the three of them restored Carlos's 19th-century house there to become the winery.
Since 2016 the wines have been made by Marc Isart, a founder of the Comando G group and a real Gredos expert. The vineyards are organic and the cellar work is kept light. Expect mountain Garnacha from slate and granite: fragrant and elegant, with fine tannins.
