Plantagenet

Plantagenet was the very first winery in Western Australia's Great Southern. It is in the township of Mount Barker, in a shire that early English settlers named after the royal House of Plantagenet.

In 1968 Tony Smith, an English migrant descended from the Plantagenets, put a small inheritance into a farm called Bouverie. Vines went in during the late 1960s and his first wine came out in 1974. Today there are five vineyards covering 126 hectares, on gravelly loam over clay, sand and ironstone.

The cool Southern Ocean nearby means slow ripening and very aromatic grapes. Expect classic, elegant wines: Cabernet Sauvignon with fine tannins, highly regarded Riesling and spicy Shiraz.
