Proprietà Sperino

Proprietà Sperino is a 12-hectare hillside estate in Lessona, near Biella in northern Piedmont. Its sandy soils, left by an ancient supervolcano, are rich in iron and manganese and very acidic, which gives the Nebbiolo a strong mineral streak.

The De Marchi family, formerly of Isole e Olena in Chianti Classico, inherited it from their relative Felice Sperino, a viticulture professor in Turin. Paolo De Marchi dreamed of reviving it from the 1970s. His son Luca now runs it and makes the wine, with Paolo on hand to advise.

Expect fragrant, intense Nebbiolo in a Burgundian style, with softer tannins than Nebbiolo from the Langhe, plus a Nebbiolo rosé and local blends with Vespolina and Croatina.
