Protero
Protero is an Adelaide Hills vineyard bought by Stephen and Fiona Pannell in late 2019. Within days a major bushfire surrounded it. The vineyard came through, and the bravery of the people who defended it stayed with them.
The Pannells already knew the site well. They had worked with it since 2005, when Stephen came back from working a harvest in Barolo with Aldo Vajra. It has five different Nebbiolo clones and cool autumns. Stephen has since planted Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Dolcetto and Barbera, which he thinks suit this cool spot.
As with their other labels, SC Pannell and Koomilya, the idea is good fruit from the right place and very little meddling in the winery. Expect perfumed Nebbiolo and an aromatic white blend made for spicy food.
