Producer Piedmont, Italy

Prunotto

Alfredo Prunotto started his business in Piedmont in 1922 and was one of the region's liveliest exporters until he retired in 1956. His friend Beppe Colla then took over, and went on to become one of the founding figures of modern Piedmont wine.

In 1961 Beppe made a big call: he bottled wines from single top vineyards, or "crus", which is now normal practice across the region. Those first wines came from bought-in grapes. In the 1990s the Antinori family of Tuscany, the current owners, bought more vineyard land, including plots in Bussia and Bric Turot, and the line-up of single-vineyard wines has grown since.

Since 2014 the style has shifted and quality has climbed again. Expect pure, aromatic Nebbiolo and well-balanced, concentrated Barbera.
