Producer Minho, Portugal

Quinta de Azevedo

Quinta de Azevedo is a historic estate in Portugal's Minho, near the Cávado River, with roots going back to the founding of the country in the 12th century. The Guedes family bought it in 1982 and have restored it with care.

There are 34 hectares of local grapes. The old pergolas have given way to cordon-trained vines, so more air and sun reach the grapes and they ripen healthier. Winemaker Diogo Sepúlveda picks at night and ferments cool in steel to keep things fresh.

Recent vintages are made only from estate fruit, after years of buying from local growers. Expect elegant whites: Loureiro brings citrus and tropical notes, Alvarinho gives stone fruit and structure, and some wines see a little old oak for texture.
