Rafael Palacios

Rafael Palacios set up his own winery in 2004 and has quickly become one of Spain's leading white wine makers. His focus is Godello from 32 parcels, 28 hectares in all, in the Val do Bibei, part of Valdeorras in Galicia.

This is rugged country, where vines grow among rocks and stones. Sandy soils of broken-down granite keep the vines in check, and heights of 620 to 740 metres bring cool nights and a long season. The slopes are so steep that most vines sit on old stone terraces, which Rafa farms with care to keep them standing. Some of the oldest plots are farmed biodynamically.

Expect Godello with a flinty, salty edge, wild flower aromas and lovely texture, often fermented in large oak.
