San Giusto a Rentennano

San Giusto a Rentennano sits in Gaiole, in the south of Chianti Classico. It was once a Cistercian monastery, fortified in 1204. The Ricasoli family made it a farm in the 16th century, and it came to the Martini di Cigala family by marriage in 1904.

Today brother and sister Luca and Elisabetta Martini di Cigala run it. Of 160 hectares, just over 30 are vines, at 270 metres on sand mixed with chalky clay, all farmed organically. Luca's care in the vineyard gets the most out of every vine.

That care carries into the cellar. He has even had his cement tanks altered so the best parcels can be plunged by hand, which gives smooth, fine tannins. Expect fine, smooth Sangiovese, and a much-loved Vin Santo too.
