San Polo
San Polo is a Brunello di Montalcino estate in the east of the area. Marilisa Allegrini bought it in 2006 after searching for years for the right place, and she now runs it with her daughters Carlotta and Caterina.
There are 16 hectares of vines on 22 hectares of land, at 400 to 450 metres. The soils are poor and stony, mostly galestro, a crumbly clay schist that keeps yields low and suits Sangiovese well. Each plot is mapped and looked after on its own.
The estate has held sustainable certification since 2013, organic since 2017, and has been certified vegan since 2019. Expect classic Montalcino with a little more weight than wines from the north of the area: ripe fruit, cedar and fine tannins.
