Santiago Ruiz

Santiago Ruiz, known as "the father of Albariño", was a giant of Galician wine and helped found the Rías Baixas DO during the 1980s. He was the first in the region to use stainless steel tanks, and San Miguel de Tabagón has a street named after him.

His estate is in O Rosal, the most southerly part of Rías Baixas, on the north bank of the Miño facing Portugal. It gets more sun and less rain than the rest, with Atlantic breezes and river air. Sandy soil over granite gives rich aromas and a wet-stone feel. Wines from here must include the fragrant Loureiro grape.

Winemaker Chema Ureta carries on the legacy. There are 44 hectares on south-facing slopes, farmed sustainably and picked by hand. The winery also belongs to WETWINE, a project to cut waste.
