Producer South Australia, Australia

Shaw + Smith

Shaw + Smith began in 1989, when Michael Hill Smith MW and his cousin Martin Shaw decided to follow a long-held dream of making wine together. Martin trained at the University of Bordeaux, and in 1988 Michael became the first Australian to pass the Master of Wine exams.

They make refined wines only from the Adelaide Hills, sticking to grapes that love a cool climate: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Pinot Noir. Chief winemaker Adam Wadewitz leads the team with Matthew Large and Alex Clark, working closely with viticulturist Murray Leake. As Adam puts it, these days the wine is made in the vineyard.

Their high Lenswood vineyard, bought in 2012, has lifted quality a lot. They also have a sister project in Tasmania, Tolpuddle.
