Spice Route

Charles Back was one of the first to see the promise of South Africa's Swartland. He founded Spice Route in 1998 after tasting a superb Sauvignon Blanc and buying the land it grew on straight away. In 2019 Tim Atkin MW rated it "Cru Bourgeois" in his South Africa classification.

Spice Route owns all its own vineyards, 100 hectares in Malmesbury and Darling, because they believe great wine starts in the vines. The Malmesbury vines are all bush vines on shale and red clay, which gives intense fruit. Despite the near-desert conditions, nothing is irrigated.

Charles and winemaker Charl du Plessis have worked together since 2002. Expect rich, Rhône-style reds and blends, juicy Grenache and Mourvèdre, and great-value old-vine Chenin Blanc.
