Spinyback comes from Nelson in New Zealand, next door to Marlborough across the Richmond Ranges. Nelson is less famous abroad, so its wines tend to be better value.

The name is another word for the tuatara, a reptile that is the only survivor of an ancient group of animals, the rest of which vanished 60 million years ago. The brand has pledged to help protect it.
