Tenuta Mazzolino

Tenuta Mazzolino is one of the most exciting estates in Lombardy's Oltrepò Pavese. Its 20 organic hectares are split into 36 plots on marl soils, at 300 to 350 metres, with cool air off the Apennines keeping mornings fresh.

The house sits on a rounded hill that locals call the "hill of Pinot Nero". Francesca Seralvo's grandfather, a Milan banker, bought it in the 1970s as a weekend retreat. He caught the wine bug and, egged on by friends, made his first serious Pinot Nero in 1985, then tried Chardonnay too.

Burgundy winemaker Kyriakos Kynigopoulos still advises Francesca, who now runs the estate. Champagne consultant Dominique Leboeuf helps with the sparkling wine. Expect pure, unoaked Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, fine fizz and a rustic local Bonarda.
