Tenuta Principe Alberico

Tenuta Principe Alberico sits on the Appian Way, the famous old road out of Rome. In 1946 it passed to Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi, Prince of Venosa, and its wines were once compared with the very best of Tuscany.

Shortly before he died, the Prince pulled up almost all the vines. His granddaughter Alessia Antinori has since brought the place back to life. It is tiny: only eight rows of the old vines remain, four of Merlot and the two Cabernets, the rest Sémillon, given by a family friend and farmed organically since the 1970s.

There is now a newer white and red at a friendlier price, a great way into the wines of Lazio.
