Tenuta San Leonardo

Tenuta San Leonardo sits in Trentino, in the far north of Italy. The Guerrieri Gonzaga family have lived here for more than three hundred years, but serious winemaking only began when Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga took the reins.

Carlo had spent time at Tenuta San Guido, learning from Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the man behind Sassicaia. He came home wondering if his own clay and limestone soils could do something similar. In 1978 he planted Cabernet Sauvignon next to the Merlot and Carmenère already growing on the estate, and four years later came the first vintage of the estate's top red. It soon earned a place among Italy's most respected wines.
