Thorne & Daughters

Thorne & Daughters is a small South African label started in 2013 by John and Tasha Thorne-Seccombe. They are a big part of the Cape's New Wave of winemaking, and they share a cellar with Gabriëlskloof, working with their friend Peter-Allan Finlayson.

They buy grapes from 15 growers in places such as Swartland, Stellenbosch, Bot River and the Overberg. They work closely with those farmers and, where they can, help them cut out chemical weedkillers and fungicides.

The cellar work is simple. Whites ferment with wild yeast in old French barrels and rest on their lees. Reds get a gentle touch, often with stems and whole bunches, so there is no need for new oak. Expect Cape blends and single vineyard wines from grapes like Chenin Blanc, Semillon and Grenache.
