Vaudieu
Vaudieu dates from the 18th century and sits in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in France's southern Rhône. The name means Valley of God, after the beauty of the place. The Bréchet family have owned it for more than 50 years, and Laurent Bréchet, grandson of the first owner, runs it now.
There are 70 hectares of vines, mostly red grapes, just east of the village. The soils change a lot, from sand and chalky slopes to terraces of large round stones. Sandy plots give perfume and grace, while the stony ones bring power.
Expect full, mineral whites led by Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, and reds from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre full of ripe red and black fruit and spice.
