Vetus

Vetus is the Antón family's project in Toro, in northwest Spain. They also own Izadi, Orben and Finca Villacreces, and in 2003 they bought 20 hectares of vines in Villabuena del Puente. The grape is Tinta de Toro, which is what Toro calls Tempranillo.

The vines are 25 to 60 years old and face south on sand and clay. Life is tough for vines here: freezing winters, frost, gales and baking summers. The poor soil keeps yields low, which gives deep colour and flavour, but the vines need careful handling to stop the alcohol running high.

The reds are dark and fruity with a little spice from oak. The family also make a crisp Verdejo from an old high vineyard in Rueda.
