Vigneti del Vulture
Vigneti del Vulture is a small co-operative in Acerenza, right in the Aglianico del Vulture area of Basilicata in southern Italy. In 2008 it was taken over by Valentino Sciotti, who runs the Fantini group.
Winery at Acerenza, Basilicata.
Consultant Alberto Antonini works with winemaker Danilo Gizzi. Alberto says coming here feels like going back a few centuries. It is a quiet, little-explored corner of Italy. The vines are trained low on the slopes of Monte Vulture, an old volcano, at up to 800 metres, and many are more than 80 years old.
Those volcanic soils give wines with a clear mineral streak and lively acidity. There are spicy, elegant reds from Aglianico, and a white blend of Greco and Fiano.
