Vollrads

Schloss Vollrads in Germany's Rheingau dates back to the 13th century, making it one of the oldest wine estates anywhere. Back in 1716 it became the first estate to make Kabinett, and it still likes to try new things.

All its wines have been certified organic since 2022. One vineyard even holds every Riesling clone known, to study how each copes with a changing climate. Dr Rowald Hepp ran the estate for nearly 22 years and in 2021 handed over to Ralf Bengel, staying on as an adviser.

The 80 hectares of Riesling sit between the Rhine and wooded hills that block cold north winds, and 21 hectares are rated top-class sites. Yields are kept low and grapes are picked by hand when fully ripe. Expect styles from crisp and dry to rich and sweet.
