Quinta dos Carvalhais

The 50-hectare estate sits at 465 to 500 metres on Dão granite. It is farmed sustainably, and sheep graze between the vines in winter, which helps the soil and cuts the need for weedkiller. Each grape is matched to its own plot, and a modern gravity-fed winery lets each plot be made separately.

Winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida uses a mix of barrel sizes, new and used, so the oak never takes over. Expect depth, bright fruit and elegance, from Encruzado whites to Touriga Nacional reds.
